Pairing: Jack/Sawyer

“ No,”

“ No?” repeated Jack incredulously. Sawyer settled back on the sand and gave him a winning smile, a lock of dirty blonde hair falling across startling green eyes as he stared up at him with lazy insolence.

“ No,” repeated Sawyer, flicking a page in his book and beginning to read again. “ Sorry ‘bout that, doc,”

Jack ground his teeth and counted to ten in the privacy of his own head. Around them the sounds of the beach continued, the waters lapping against the sand, people’s conversations quiet murmurs in the background. And the sound of a page turning as Sawyer continued reading his damned book without so much as a care in the world, the little scavenger rat who had stolen and thieved and who then had the gall to refuse a perfectly reasonable request.

“ And exactly what are you planning to use it for?” he finally managed to speak without growling. Sawyer’s eyes flickered to his again in amusement.

“ ‘Aint what I’m using it for, Doc. It’s how badly other people want it.” Green eyes turned to the book, a smile flickering at the corner of his mouth. “ Like doctors, for instance,”

Not for the first time the memory of where on the body you could make it really, really hurt went through Jack’s mind and applied itself happily to Sawyer’s anatomy. But he couldn’t do that. It was wrong. Or at least he wouldn’t be able to get away with it without Kate’s reproachful stare on him for the rest of the damned stay on this island.

At this present moment that seemed like a small price to pay to take the damned smirk off Sawyer’s face.

“ Get up,” Jack said finally, folding his arms. Sawyer looked unimpressed, a eyebrow raising slightly as he gazed back at him.

“ Beg pardon?” the sneer appeared to have made it to Sawyer’s vocal chords. Teeth were ground yet again, Jack’s arms pressed a little tighter against his chest to resist bending down and pulling the man up from his sandy perch roughly by an arm.

“ You heard. Get up. You and I are going to have a look at the person you’re not willing to help, and then you can explain to *them* why something that’s reasonably straightforward is being slowed down by an arrogant bastard like yourself.”

At least that appeared to have hit a nerve. Green eyes narrowed at him further, the smile fading at the corner of Sawyer’s mouth. Eyes moved sulkily back to the book.

” Ain’t none of my business, doc. Don’t take this the wrong way… no, actually, do. Fuck off,” there was a definite snarl at the end of his words, the book being raised a little higher as an obvious indication that the conversation was *over*. Of course, Jack didn’t care what the book thought about this, just as he didn’t care about the snarl of outrage as he gave in to the urge to grab Sawyer roughly by the arm and yank him up. The book dangled limply in Sawyer’s hand as he stared in incredulous anger back at him.

“ Just what the fuck d’you-,” he didn’t get very far before Jack’s hand connected solidly with his back and shoved him forward towards the jungle. Sawyer stumbled a few paces then looked back at him, the customary smirk slowly making a reappearance. “ Well, well. You going all manly on me, doc? Must be hard for you playing the hero all the time,”

“ Shut up and move,” Jack walked towards him, a steady glare in his eyes, not caring for the threat, the words or indeed anything else. Sawyer looked at him then looked towards the jungle, jerking a thumb towards it as though Jack had somehow missed it.

“ You want me to go in there with you?” Sawyer’s voice was tinged with disbelief. Jack walked past him, grabbing hold of Sawyer’s arm again and all but dragging him behind him like a disobedient dog who had just stolen the last of the cookies. He managed all of three steps before Sawyer ripped his arm away, standing his ground and glaring back at him. “ You ain’t getting this, are you? Not a fucking chance in hell-,”

“ What’s going on?”

Jack sighed through his teeth, straightened his shoulders and didn’t immediately turn round. Of course. Where there was a scuffle with Sawyer Kate was never far behind, as though she somehow had a Sawyer radar up and working.

” Business,” he said finally, glancing around at her. There was a snort from Sawyer.

“ Yeah, right.”

“ Shut up, Sawyer,” Jack’s voice could have cut metal.

“ Make me,” Sawyer snarled back.

“ Guys, let’s not do this now-,”

“ You want me to make you?” Jack turned to stride the few paces between them, glaring at green eyes from mere inches away. “ I could do it. Trust me on this,”

“ Yeah? Let me guess. You and your little doctor pals went off to do some fancy martial art thing and you can beat me up with one hand tied behind your back? Cause from where I’m standing doc, unless you’re about to pull a sword out your ass you ain’t in a good position to start ordering me around,” Sawyer was almost touching him, a fire blazing in his eyes.

“ You’re not tough enough to need it. Just a punch and you’d be down on the ground and sobbing,” Jack growled back.

“ Guys, I really think-,”

“ Yeah? You think?” Sawyer’s chest was almost flat to Jack’s, the smirk back in force. “ You ain’t got what it takes to make me curl up on the floor, doc, and you’re not so-“

“ GUYS!” hands inserted between them and shoved them apart, a furious face glaring at them. “ Not now!”

Jack looked across at her angrily, then back towards the beach where yes, they were indeed the centre of attention. Well, there was little to do other than the soap operas of everyone else’s lives. A fight was a decent replacement for whatever was on the television. He sighed angrily and looked back at Sawyer who was giving Kate a particularly sulky look that Jack assumed the man used to get his own way and to get laid. Sexual puppy-dog ahoy.

“ Come on Freckles, we’re just having a conversation here-,”

“ Not on the beach you’re not. You two want to go beat each other up, do it somewhere else,” her voice was the voice of women everywhere, firm, precise, This Was What Was Happening. Jack was about to comment when it suddenly occurred to him what she had said. He frowned.

“ Go do it somewhere else? I thought you hated us fighting?” Jack replied, wearily patient.

“ And look where it got me! I’m tired of stopping you two try to rip each other’s throats out! Go in there and GET IT SORTED,” A finger was pointed directly at the jungle, eyes glaring at him. Sawyer straightened and shook his head, blonde hair flying like a dog trying to dry itself.

“ No way, Freckles.”

“ What? You’re scared?” she rounded on him, folding her arms. “ The big man afraid of a few leaves? You don’t have to go too far in, just far enough away from the camp that people aren’t going to worry!”

“ Fuck other people!” retorted Sawyer. “ I ain’t going anywhere!”

“ He’s scared,” confirmed Jack with a grin.

“ I am not!”

“ Then after you,” Jack made a dramatic gesture towards the jungle and raised an eyebrow at Sawyer’s glare towards it. Sawyer shook his head and folded his arms, the very picture of hurt innocence, a dark expression in his eyes. They waited like that for several moments, simply waiting and watching each other for the first person to make a move.

“ Fine,” growled Sawyer finally, his eyes flashing towards Kate then back again. “ If we’re doing this, let’s do it,”

The smile on Jack’s face wasn’t exactly pleasant but it wasn’t the slightly demonic grin he wanted to give, just good old fashioned Doctor lying. Got him. He knew he would at some point, knew that Sawyer was bound to have to give in and get some ‘quality’ time together in the loudest argument the island would ever know, possibly even put in the boot here and there. And by the slightly haunted expression that was currently gracing Sawyer’s face it was clear the other man knew the damned battle was going to be one easily lost.

This was going to be fun. Benefiting the island, of course but that never stopped you from being able to poke a little fun here and there when it was offered. And if anyone needed to be tormented it was the cocky little bastard by the name of Sawyer. Man just needed to be tied to a tree and beaten until either he behaved or the stick broke.
